About us

Experience

Select Breeding is an initiative of Dennis and Michael de Geus. These two brothers, born and raised at a rose nursery, have had a passion for roses from their earliest years. After finishing their education, both of them went to work in the family business and so acquired their knowledge of rose growing. Because of their interest in developing new breeds, they took their first steps in rose breeding ten years ago. The experience they acquired as growers has now been carried over into the breeding process. Select Breeding thinks along the same lines as its clients and thinks with them.

The first cross-fertilizations were carried out in 2000. This resulted in the first seeds and seedlings. The first cultivars were introduced to the auctions in the Netherlands in 2004, giving rise to worldwide interest in our varieties. To keep up with demand, a partnership with Olij Rozen was entered into, in order to represent the cultivars. In those years, the two companies made use of each other’s knowledge and insights. At the start of 2009, after ten years of research and testing, Select Breeding began breeding roses using a new method.

Vision

Over the years, Select Breeding has developed its own vision concerning rose breeding and growing; a vision that fits in with its objective. It is a fact that many new cultivars are introduced to the market, but many are not successful. This may be due to poor commercial qualities, excessive supply, too much competition in the colour segment or a poor introduction policy. Despite the difficult period that the rose growing industry is going through, we see a lot of opportunities for it.

Cooperation with the growers and dealers in the development and introduction of new varieties is part of our company’s philosophy. The breeding programme of Select Breeding takes into account the various varieties characteristics that rose growers demand of our product in different markets. The development of high quality cultivars, coupled with an exclusive and responsible release policy, is intended to result in an excellent yield of new varieties.
